Best and Worst Foods for your Thyroid

The most important trick of treating any problems with the thyroid gland is to find the cause. It can fall in five major categories, according to Prudence Hall, MD, from The Hall Center, which include heavy metal toxicity, genetics, iodine deficiency, and gluten.

“In general, anything that is bad for the body is bad for the thyroid,”

Sugar, Dairy, Gluten, Soy products and Fatty foods – not good
Vitamin D Foods – (Salmon, Mushrooms) – good

Lettuce

“Lettuce is low in Sodium, and very low in Saturated Fat and Cholesterol. It is also a good source of Thiamin, Vitamin B6, Iron and Potassium, and a very good source of Dietary Fiber, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin K, Folate and Manganesenutritiondata.self.com

Vitamin B6 is naturally present in many foods. The body needs vitamin B6 for more than 100 enzyme reactions involved in metabolism. Vitamin B6 is also involved in brain development during pregnancy and infancy as well as immune function.

This is an interesting link and talks about benefits and a few interactions

And following link is an overview of why lettuce is good for you, not least it helps your heart and helps you relax and helps you to sleep  more

Romaine-lettuce

Doctors Office.  A guy walks into the doctor’s office. A banana stuck in one of his ears, a head of lettuce in the other ear, and a carrot stuck in one nostril.

The man says, “Doc, this is terrible. What’s wrong with me?” The doctor says, “Well, first of all, you need to eat more sensibly.”

Tomato Soup

Tomato Soup - m.joy

Looked at two recipes for tomato soup but mainly used the recipe from ‘The Kitchen and Garden Book of Herbs’ by Jessica Houdret and Joanna Farrow but also looked at a tomato soup recipe from BBC Good Food.

Tomatos, onions and carrot above are from our garden. Good year for tomatos and first time grown onions – usually grow shallots.

    Ingredients

800g chopped tomatoes *
1 carrot – chopped
1 onion – chopped
1 vegetable stock cube in 750 mls boiled water
small amount of sugar (optional)
spoon of single cream
seasoning

    Method

  • Saute chopped onion and carrot for about 10 minutes in butter – stirring
  • While the onion/carrot are cooking – chop the tomatoes
  • Place chopped tomatoes, sauted onion and carrot in a bigger clean saucepan with 750 mls water and stock cube
  • Bring to the boil and simmer for 20 minutes, stirring
  • Season and add a little sugar (if soup tastes acidic)
  • Wizz with hand blender
  • Press through a sieve into a clean pan
  • Add the cream and heat through – don’t allow the soup to boil
  • Add more seasoning if necessary
  • Add small soup noodles, cooked separately (optional)

* I removed the seeds from the tomatoes when i chopped them but then pressed the pulp/seeds through a sieve to collect any liquid and reduced the amount of water added later with the stock cube, by same amount

First wondered if my cat thought he was Elvis…

big cat by here kitty kitty catster

Not because he stands infront of the mirror in a white leather suite – sorry suit – with tassles but he likes to eat. Everything – potatoes are his favorite but he also likes chips. Apart from the ‘W’ word and dont mean earthworm jim – he could be bored and lonely, even depressed … more

Fluffy just gave me a soulful look and would like to add, this is not a picture of Fluffy above … at the moment.

He is also a patriotic cat and Congratulates HRH the Queen today and sends his best purrs.

Fluffy’s… Favorite indoor occupation: unravelling loo rolls, sitting in boxes
Favorite indoor location: head inside blue fleece roll, rest doesnt fit
Favorite outdoor occupation: climbing trees and vole hunting
Least favorite place: inside cars (industrial cat pants would be interesting idea)
